"It reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel." "...an exceptional job of showing that the subgenre can still be thoroughly entertaining." "Great story." Lord Charles Stewart and school teacher Mary Hastings team up in this thriller set in Yorkshire, England of 1928. The peaceful, rural countryside betrays the evil lurking in the heart of a killer whose identity must be determined before more victims are claimed. Charles and Mary have little information to go on and little time. Fans of Golden Age mysteries will love The Enemy in Our Midst.

The Enemy in Our Midst A Lord Charles Stewart Mystery John E Conley Books

“The Enemy in Our Midst,” by John E. Conley, is an excellent and enjoyable novel in the classic “whodunit” model exemplified by the works of Dorothy L. Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, and Arthur Upfield. It has the traditional upper class sleuth, Lord Charles Stewart, two apparently unrelated murders, red herrings to mislead the reader, and an attention to detail that makes it pleasurable to read.
The novel opens in July of 1916 with a battalion of Yorkshire men attacking the German army along the Somme. Members of the battalion include Colonel Peter Humphries, commander; Charles Stewart, son of a Yorkshire Duke, embedded, in modern terminology, with the battalion; Bingham, a Secret Service Bureau agent gathering intelligence for the British Army in France (the Secret Service Bureau, founded in 1909, was the predecessor of the current British Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6), and other members of the battalion.
Following introduction of the key characters in France, the story moves to Yorkshire in 1928, where Colonel Humphries has arranged for a week-long reunion of battalion members, including Lord Charles and Bingham, who has been serving as Lord Charles’ butler since the end of the war. Of course, in the middle of the reunion a mysterious murder occurs and Lord Charles, with the assistance of Bingham and of Mary Hastings, a young lady whom Lord Charles meets in the course of his inquiries, investigates the murder at the reunion and a subsequent, seemingly unrelated murder.
The quality of the writing is excellent, reminding me of that of Ngaio Marsh, Arthur Upfield, and of Dorothy L. Sayers, whom I have long considered one of the best writers of English in the mystery genre. The author uses excellent descriptive language without being overblown and clearly has researched the subject. His geographical information as to Yorkshire is accurate and his devotion to necessary detail is revealed in his obvious research into certain aspects of British family law and changes therein in the late 1920’s that are critical to an understanding of the plot.
The classic “whodunit” is considered by many to be an outdated subgenre of the mystery novel. However, John E. Conley has done an exceptional job of showing that the subgenre can still be thoroughly entertaining. I am looking forward to reading further investigations by Lord Charles Stewart.

The Enemy in Our Midst A Lord Charles Stewart Mystery John E Conley Books Reviews

I really like the book. There were all the red herrings and rabbit trails of course, but I was able to connect most of the dots .... But not easily!
I love this kind of mystery. I wanted to like it and have a new series to enjoy. But the plot was convoluted and confusing as different points of view were introduced. And i could barely remember who was who, because they were such cardboard characters. I might try one more in this series to see whether the author improves. But if you are looking for an engaging British mystery, skip this one.
Great story. Can't wait for the next book about Lord Charles Stewart.
Twists and turns and the characters are each unique and under suspect. Very engaging. Nice to meet Charles and Mary!
Beautiful writing, delicious plot twists, wonderful atmosphere. Looking for more of these stories. Most enjoyable period detective mystery.
This book is like an Agatha Christie with great insights into life just after the war. One example the butler waxing his master's boots while the Lord (his master) smokes a cigar and reads the Times!!

The clues were distilled in such a way that any number of people appeared to be possible culprits. I got the 'baddie' quite quickly ad well as the motive, but it was still nice to read the elimination process that lead the amateur sleuth to the killer.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel. The story takes place in 1928 Yorkshire, England. Lord Charles Stewart sets out to solve a murder and becomes involved with people he hasn't seen in many years. The story moves along at a good pace and is very well written. I hope we have more stories coming regarding Lord Stewart's adventures. I recommend this book.
